Non-Profit Governance 101

This online, 2-3 hour workshop covers the key fundamentals of effective non-profit governance as a board member or executive director/CEO. We will cover the following key aspects in this workshop:  

  • Governance and oversight requirements as per the BC Societies Act.
  • What is a strategic plan, how does it benefit an organization and how to ensure it is implemented effectively.
  • Executive Directors and Board Members: Understanding your roles, as far as the separation of operational and governance/oversight responsibilities.
  • The different types of boards, developing a board committee system, as well as how those committees support the work of a board and organization.
  • Board organization: How to efficiently organize and conduct board meetings, as well as handle business in between meetings, so that volunteer directors aren’t being overwhelmed, but the necessary work is being done.
  • ED and Board Support: How your executive director and board members can best support each other in your separate roles.
  • Organizational Policies: Learn about essential policies that any board and organization should have in place, as well as who creates and ensures that they’re enforced.

Understanding and Embracing Accessibility in the Workplace

This online 1.5 hour workshop explores what both accessibility and an accessible workplace for employees of all diverse abilities truly looks like. We will dive into the following:

  • The standard definition of accessibility vs. what it means for people with different challenges. 
  • Understanding the various barriers to accessibility- physical, societal, attitudinal and systemic. How do these affect an employee’s ability.
  • How to respectfully approach, discuss and learn about employees' accessibility needs in the workplace.
  • Accommodation vs. condescension: How do we avoid the latter?
  • How to promote accessibility awareness throughout your organization.

Attendees should feel free to use the “raise hand” button if they have questions or concerns at any time during the workshops.
